The Necessary Work of Evolution

It is difficult to feel compassion for yourself when you have not yet recognized your own worth.

When you experience a shift in perception about an area of your life, that awareness rarely happens overnight. More often, a new understanding unfolds gradually, sometimes over many years. Personal evolution requires experience, reflection, discomfort, and ultimately, courage. The same is true for humanity’s progression toward greater compassion.

Consider my client, Sara, who worked for a boss who was verbally and emotionally abusive. At first, she did not fully register his harsh words or the subtle anxiety she felt each morning before work. Over time, she began to recognize that he frequently criticized her and rarely acknowledged her efforts. Yet, her awareness was incomplete. Instead of questioning his behavior, she questioned herself. She worked harder, stayed later, and tried relentlessly to earn approval that was never going to come.

It is difficult to feel compassion for yourself when you have not yet recognized your own worth.

Eventually, Sara opened up to her friends, who reminded her of her previous job where she had received stellar reviews and promotions. Even then, she struggled to leave. Awareness does not immediately become action. Growth requires readiness. After several more years, the emotional strain led her to therapy. There, with guidance and support, she began to see clearly: she was not the problem. She learned to extend compassion toward herself. That self-compassion became the turning point. It gave her the strength to leave and to seek environments aligned with respect and mutual appreciation.

Her evolution was not instant. It was layered. It required time.

In many ways, this mirrors where we are collectively. As a nation, and even as a global community, we are becoming more aware of injustice, inequality, and harm that previously went unnoticed or unchallenged. Like Sara in the early stages of her journey, societies often normalize unhealthy systems before recognizing them. Awareness grows slowly. Resistance is natural. Accountability can feel uncomfortable. This is exactly where we are as a nation. We are evolving, and because this evolutionary process does not belong to one individual but to millions of people, each carrying unique perceptions about others and the world at large, this transformation cannot happen overnight. Collective growth is inherently slower than personal growth. It requires dialogue, reflection, and, at times, discomfort. The evolution that is so necessary for our planet to move toward greater compassion is unfolding, but it is unfolding in its own time.

And yet, there are those among us who seem to arrive with an innate sense of empathy and understanding. They do not need to unlearn cruelty or division; they already embody compassion. These individuals often feel the sorrow of the world deeply. With every breath, they long for the suffering to end and for humanity to awaken more quickly.

But even they must wait.

Because evolution, whether of a single heart or an entire civilization, requires time. It requires repeated lessons. It requires experience. And perhaps most importantly, it requires patience with one another as we grow at different speeds.

The slow pace of change is not proof that compassion is failing. It is proof that humanity is learning. And learning, especially on a global scale, is a process.

Evolution takes time. And time, when guided by awareness and compassion, becomes our greatest teacher.
